Vancouver penthouse of Edmonton Oilers owner Daryl Katz for sale for $38 million

Canadian billionaire Daryl Katz — best-known as the owner of the Edmonton Oilers hockey team and former owner of Rexall Drugs — has put his luxury downtown Vancouver penthouse on the market for $38 million.

The two-level penthouse sits atop the 47-storey Fairmont Pacific Rim residences and hotel at 1011 West Cordova Street. The lowest priced listing currently available in the building is a one-bedroom, 742 sq ft. unit for $1.69 million.

Katz’s penthouse is considerably larger, measuring 6,652 sq ft., plus a 2,900 sq ft. terrace with spectacular views of the Lions Gate Bridge, Coal Harbour and North Shore Mountains.

The home has four bedrooms and five bathrooms, a beautiful modern kitchen with Miele appliances and wine cooler, three fireplaces, and custom built-ins throughout. Three underground parking stalls are included.

City of Vancouver property taxes were $49,759.03 in 2017, and maintenance fees come in at a cool $4,762.79 per month.

The listing is by West Vancouver-based agent Malcolm Hasman, and can be viewed online here.

If you want to see it in person, it’s by appointment only.

Neighbour is Crown Prince of Dubai

The private appointments are certainly understandable when you consider the price tag, and the fact that one of your neighbours is the Crown Prince of Dubai.

35-year-old Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, also known as Fazza, purchased the adjacent penthouse in 2013 for $55 million, a Vancouver real estate record at the time.

The crown prince’s penthouse spans three floors, and is rarely occupied.

Katz in escrow on $120 million California estate

The sale of the Fairmont penthouse is not the only transaction Katz is juggling this winter.

Curbed LA reports that he’s in escrow on the city’s most expensive piece of real estate ever — a $120 million USD, six-acre Malibu estate owned by celebrity real estate agent Kurt Rappaport.

The stunning beachfront mansion sits on six acres, and measures 15,000 sq ft. with seven bedrooms, ten bathrooms, and the longest swimming pool in California. There is also an adjacent guest “pavilion.”

TMZ reports that Katz has recently been leasing the home for $750,000 USD per month — a good way to take a $120 million home for a test drive.

Coal Harbour home to Vancouver’s most expensive condominiums

In less than a decade, Coal Harbour has become downtown Vancouver’s premium, high-density neighbourhood. Less than a block away from the Katz penthouse, the penthouse of Three Harbour Green was listed for $58.8 million in 2016.

The spectacular home — designed by local interior design agency House of Bohn — is spread over the top two floors of the luxury waterfront condominium tower. The home features 8,000 sq ft. of living space, plus a 5,000 sq ft. of outdoor terrace.

It’s not known if the condominium sold in 2016, as the listing was removed from MLS a few weeks after it was posted.

  1. (for the fairmont pacific condo) looks like someone doesn’t want to pay the vacant homes tax for 2018. hey city of Vancouver, maybe this should be the first property you perform an audit on to see if Katz had it occupied for 6 or more months for 2017..
