Life Between Umbrellas competition offers shelter from Raincouver

The Vancouver Public Space Network and Viva Vancouver are set to announce this week the winners of the Life Between Umbrellas competition — a city-wide competition to design rain-friendly public spaces.

One of the most dramatic finalists is Mushroom Patch in the Urban Rainforest by Siu Architecture, pictured above.

The design, intended for Nelson Park in the West End, “is inspired by an encounter with bracket fungi growing out of a dead tree on a hiking trail up Black Mountain invoking visions of giant mushrooms sheltering urban living rooms as iconic structures mitigating scale in a forest of glass and concrete.”

The winners will be announced Thursday, July 18 with free tickets available here.

There are three streams in the competition:

Stream 1: The Place – An idea to make a new or existing public space (such as a plaza, street, sidewalk, laneway, parklet, or park) rain-friendly.

Stream 2: The Intervention – A rain-friendly design feature or element, or seasonal structure that can serve to enhance an existing public space.

Stream 3: The Celebration – A rain-friendly pop-up activation (e.g. an event or interactive installation) in a public space that will help build a more positive culture of rain-friendly activity, fostering social connections in the rainy months.
