The Marq at UBC stands apart with freehold homes

The Marq, a boutique condo building of only 22 homes is coming soon to the University Endowment Lands next to UBC, and it’s freehold — a rarity in the UEL where the majority of homes are on 99-year leases.

The Marq will be located at 2225 Acadia Road, and developed by Westland. Designed by Rotsitch Hemphill Architects, the building will feature two bedroom, two bedroom & flex and three bedroom homes ranging from 830 to 1010 sq ft.

The origins of the University Endowment Lands date back to 1907, when a land trust was established to raise capital for the future University of British Columbia. Since then, the majority of land has been sold on 99-year leases with the proceeds funding capital investments at UBC, as well as supporting student scholarships and bursaries.

The Marq will be high-end, with imported Italian kitchens, oak hardwood floors and spa-inspired bathrooms. It goes on sale this Spring, with completion expected in mid-2022.

The development is just a few blocks away from leləm̀, an upcoming 1,250 unit condominium development which is a partnership between the Musqueam Indian Band and developer Polygon. leləm̀ will also include a grocery store, community centre and daycare centre. That development is already pre-selling its first phase, called Cedar Walk.
