The Independent in Mount Pleasant a kaleidoscope of textures and colours

Nesters Market opens at The Independent Wednesday, June 19 2019

Rize Alliance’s ambitious development, The Independent, in Mount Pleasant is nearly complete.

The 21-storey development at East Broadway and Kingsway includes 258 residential units, retail including a Nesters Market grocery store, and office space.

The Nesters Market is scheduled to open Wednesday, June 19 at noon. A Starbucks coffee shop and Freshii are already open on the East Broadway side.

A variety of materials make up the building façade, including extensive brick work in a variety of colours and patterns, public art in the laneway, and wood veneer panels on the tower.

Acton Ostry Architects Inc., describes the architecture of The Independent as follows: “The project reinterprets, celebrates and reflects various aspects of the Mount Pleasant context, street life, materiality and colour through a bricolage of jumbled effects inspired by the diverse range of buildings from different periods and styles that are located throughout the neighbourhood.”

A large courtyard is situated on the podium rooftop and features diagonal pathways and landscaped seating areas, surrounded by townhomes with colourful balcony railings and varied brickwork.
